With this version of Spike the Waterdragon, I wanted to emphasise the jewel like quality of his scales so instead of ink, I went with watercolour.

Not overdoing the background was a big challenge and I learnt a great deal whilst working on him as he is by far the largest watercolour painting I'd attempted at this point. Each scale was gone over a few times with different colours and I was very happy with the layered effect by the time I'd finished. It was hard to convince myself to stop painting.
